We offer these recommendations in pump to filter pairings and have found that if these recommendations aren't stricly followed, there are persisitent problems in filtration. The pairing CAN be upsized for the volume of water, resulting in less hours of operating time needed. Both the pump and filter must be upsized together to maintain the correct ratio and for the upsizing to be successful.
